Drake, 31, is recognized for his downtempo music, delicate lyrics, and naughty humor. His 2009 debut single, “So Far Gone,” reached No. 2 on the Billboard list. All 25 songs on his latest album, “Scorpion,” are in the top 100 and have inspired at least one viral meme.
Drake is a rare Jewish celebrity.
Aubrey Drake Graham was raised in Toronto. Drake was reared by his white Jewish mother, a grade-school teacher, and his Tennessee-born African-American drummer father. He attended a Jewish public high school but felt out of place and was called “shvartze” by racists, according to past interviews.
“I didn’t have the worst time, but I struggled. “I was always the last kid to get the party invite,” he told Rolling Stone in 2014.
He was cast in “Degrassi: The Next Generation,” a six-year Canadian adolescent drаmа, at 15 and his life transformed. Returned to high school graduation.
Drake informed the publication that he is “proud to be Jewish.” He told Rolling Stone, “I celebrate holidays with my family.” He publishes Instagram photographs of Passover and Hanukkah parties.
Many of his supporters, like Leila Pifko, are unaware of his Jewishness.
“They probably — hmm, I’m not sure,” noted Jewish Community High School of the Bay senior Pifko. “I’m unsure. I think they might? Some may know.”
Few fans ask Google if Drake is Jewish, as it doesn’t rank among the top 10 search results for the question “Is Drake …” despite public discussions about his heritage on online forums.
Some of his fans know, though.
“Jewish me𝚗 in particular really know Drake is Jewish — and love that,” said San Francisco Jewish rapper Alex Fraknoi. Drake is proud to be Jewish
Not that his Jewishness is hidden. In a 2014 “Saturday Night Live” spoof, Drake reenacted his bar mitzvah in a wig and kippah, rapping “I’m black and Jewish/it’s a mitzvah” over a klezmer clarinet.
Drake emphasizes bar mitzvahs. He had a bar mitzvah and a bar mitzvah-themed birthday party in 2017. Drake’s 2012 “HYFR” music video depicted him rapping and praying in a Miami synagogue in front of family and music friends as a “re-bar mitzvah.” A crаzy post-bar mitzvah “party” features visitors drinking Manischewitz and Lil Wayne crashing a skateboard into a table.
“I would definitely sаy that it definitely makes me more proud as a Jew,” said Canadian-born Pifko, like Drake.
Drake, unlike other famous Jewish rappers, is black. Another renowned band is the Beastie Boys, Michael Diamond, Adam Yauch, and Adam Horovitz, who topped the charts at their peak. A big decrease follows. Matisyahu famously performed in Hasidic costume (he now shaves his beard).
Matisyahu said, “He’s Jewish, but he’s not representing Judaism” about Drake in 2012. He is Jewish, like Bob Dylan.
Shyne, the son of Belize’s prime minister and a Sean “Diddy” Combs trainee, is the only other non-white Jewish rapper. Shyne converted to Judaism in prison and lives as Moses Levi. Dissed Drake as “an actor from Canada.”
In a 2009 academic study, Indiana University musicology and Jewish studies professor Judah Cohen said Jewish hip-hop has always relied on parody. Case in point: Lil Dicky. Even the Beastie Boys posed in gold chains to mock bling-focused gangsta rap. Cohen says that form of parody draws attention by coupling Jews, or the socially dominant concept of Jews, with rap, which is unlikely yet funny.
