Coldplay will cease to release new music in 2025, according to Chris Martin

According to Chris Martin, Coldplay as we know them is coming to an end. BBC Radio 2 will air a new Martin interview and Christmas hangout with Jo Whiley tomorrow. Whiley gave a preview of the event on the Zoe Ball Breakfast event today, sharing a tape featuring the relevant Martin quote: “The band will stop releasing new music after 2025.”

Martin reportedly states in the interview, “Well, I know I can tell you: Our last proper record will come out in 2025 and after that I think we will only tour.” “Maybe we’ll work together on some projects, but the Coldplay catalog is pretty much over by then.”

Whiley points out that she’s not always sure how serious Martin is being and that there might be cause to question the veracity of his assertion. We have been here before, or at least this close, when Coldplay was getting ready to release A Head Full of Dreams and Martin had hinted that it would be their last record. It is evident that Coldplay has continued since then, and it seems unlikely that they will also end abruptly after 2025 unless Martin has had some grand scheme for the band’s back catalog the entire time. However, 2025 will commemorate the 25 years since Coldplay’s debut, so perhaps Martin and company are simply accepting the notion of sailing off into the sunset as a legacy band.
