Coldplay are unstoppable despite being created nearly 20 years ago. The band—Chris Martin, Jonny Buckland, Guy Berryman, and Will Champion—has had several hits, from ‘Fix You’ to ‘Higher Power’ and ‘Humankind’, which has a great video.

Since 1996, Coldplay has been a duet in the music industry. You may not know these facts about the band and its members as they begin the second year of their epic ‘Music of the Spheres World Tour’

1) What early name did Coldplay have?

Coldplay weren’t always that! Chris Martin and Jonny Buckland met at London University in 1996 to establish the band. Together, they were Pectoralz. They became Starfish after adding bassist Guy Berryman.

Drummer and backup vocalist Will Champion completed the lineup later. Chris Martin mentioned in a Carpool Karaoke interview with James Corden that Coldplay changed their name in 1998.

2) Why is ‘Yellow’ the musical title?

Chris Martin saw the Yellow Pages while namestyling Coldplay’s 2000 song ‘Yellow’ Not as romantic as believed!

3) Coldplay origins?

Despite coming from across the UK, the band met at London University. Jonnie Buckland is from London, while Chris Martin is from a Devon town near Exeter. Scottish Guy Berryman is from Kirkcaldy, and Southampton-born Will Champion.

4) Did the band attend college?

They met there, so they did! In Coldplay’s early days, three members studied, but Guy worked in a London bar.

Chris studied Ancient World Studies and Jonny Astronomy and Mathematics.

5. How was ‘The Scientist’ music video filmed

Coldplay fans know that ‘The Scientist’ music video is unique! Chris is shown walking backwards and retracing the story throughout the film. However, Chris sings the entire song.

Like everyone else, Coldplay takes the London tube! Despite being surrounded by Coldplay fans, no one recognized Chris when he took the tube to his O2 Arena concert!

7) Where are their recordings?

North London houses Coldplay’s studio. After buying a bakery in 2006, they turned it into The Bakery studio. To regroup after ‘X&Y’s popularity, they established a studio.

10. Obama likes Coldplay.

President Barack Obama loves Coldplay and had their music on his iPod in 2012. He reportedly shared his ‘Amazing Grace’ on their ‘A Head Full of Dreams’ CD.

Of course, Chris Martin and Gwyneth Paltrow are buddies with Jay-Z and Beyoncé Knowles-Carter.

Phil Harvey—who?

The band’s creative director and previous manager, Phil Harvey, oversaw Coldplay alone in their early years. Considered the band’s fifth member.

12) Why two ‘Viva La Vida’ music videos?

Hype Williams and Anton Corbijn directed the different ‘Viva La Vida’ music videos. Anton’s tribute to Depeche Mode’s ‘Enjoy the Silence’ video was published alongside it.

13) Anything with Coldplay in films?

Yes! Jonny Buckland and Chris Martin, who are friends with Simon Pegg, made cameos in Shaun of the Dead.

November 2017 saw Chris Martin on Modern Family Season 9.

What was their debut?

Although successful, Coldplay rarely allow their music to be used for advertisements and promotions. They rejected multimillion-pound Diet Coke and GAP contracts. One of BMW’s ix and i4 electric car ads in 2021 used the band’s song ‘Higher Power’ The song’s title and line ‘this joy is electric’ make it suitable for an electric car ad.

17) Have Coldplay always used the same producer?

Coldplay has collaborated with several producers, including Brian Eno on parts of their fourth album, ‘Viva la Vida or Death and All His Friends’ On their long-awaited EP ‘Kaleidoscope’, Brian did ‘A L I E N S’!

Coldplay has given to various charities and donated ‘A L I E N S’ revenues. The group covered The Pretenders’ ‘2000 Miles’ in 2007 and donated to Future Forests and Stop Handgun Violence.

20) They wrote fans letters announcing an album.

The band sent fans a penned letter to launch their 2019 album ‘Everyday Life’, a novel strategy.

Following the letters’ arrival, admirers asked on social media if anyone else had received them. It announced a two-part record dubbed ‘Sunrise’ and ‘Sunset’.

21) Their special album launch concert

On October 15, 2021, the band released their ninth studio album, ‘Music of the Spheres’, pleasing fans. The album’s main track, ‘Higher Power’, debuted in May 2021.

22, Their recent tour was their greenest.

It was announced in 2019 that Coldplay would stop traveling until their shows are ‘environmentally beneficial’ In 2022, the band promised to ‘reduce the tour’s direct emissions by more than 50% compared to our previous tour (2016-17)’.

The ‘Music of the Spheres tour’ will visit London and Glasgow in August 2022. Later, six May/June 2023 dates were added.

Concerts featured kinetic dance floors, stationary cycles, and the band’s reforestation pledges, including one tree each ticket.

On tour, did they perform covers?

Coldplay played extra Manchester performances in May/June 2023 while the ‘Music Of The Spheres World Tour’ extended. The crowd at the Etihad Stadium heard a cover of James’ ‘Sit Down’ during another stunning display.

Aitch, a Manchester rapper known for ‘Rain’ and ‘Baby’, joined the band to honor Manchester’s musical tradition.

24) London Tube forced tour updates.

As demand increased, the band added three Wembley gigs. It was announced in early August 2022 that the extra gig on August 19 would be moved to August 21 owing to London Underground industrial action

Coldplay stated that their Wembley Stadium concert on Friday, August 19, 2022, has been delayed for Sunday, August 21, 2022, due to planned London Underground industrial action.

25) BRIT Award record.

As of now, Coldplay has the most BRIT Award nominations (30). From 2011 for British Group and British Album of the Year to 2016 for British Group, they have won nine BRIT Awards.

In the 2022 BRIT Awards, Sam Fender and Wolf Alice won Best Rock/Alternative Act and Best Group, respectively.

26) They pontooned their first performance following the outbreak.

On a pontoon, Coldplay launched the 2021 BRIT Awards, their first TV performance since the pandemic! Their ‘Higher Power’ performance featured a stunning light show and fireworks.
