Exclusive: DJ Khaled opens unique $20 million SNIPES Concept store in Miami: ‘Never done before’

DJ Khaled often turns his outrageous ideas into reality.

We the Best x SNIPES, the producer’s next project, is a massive Miami Beach concept store that represents Khaled.

Khaled, 47, SNIPES CEO Sven Voth, and SNIPES USA President Jim Bojko told PEOPLE about the long-awaited endeavor before the shop opened on Aug. 3.

Voth said the Miami facility “popped up quite immediately” when the brand started working with Khaled, who engaged with the company following a 2019 SNIPES campaign and became chief creative officer–a role he takes seriously.

“I’m taking everything so serious,” the producer tells PEOPLE. “This is very special [and] unique, but what I love about it is that the city and young world will love it.”

Khaled discovered the appropriate location in Miami, where he resides and has the keys, during a hurricane after telling the SNIPES CEO he “needs a store” on his first day.

Voth says, “He was driving through South Beach looking for a good site, and then he was standing in the hurricane having me on the phone showing me.” And he said, ‘This is my store.’”

After the 6,105-square-foot shop location Khaled found became empty, the chief creative officer got inventive

The DJ and streetwear brand intended the collaborative retail experience to be a community hub as much as a store.

Apart from shopping, the Miami Beach facility has an elevated DJ booth, free recording studio for local musicians, and a glassed-in office where Khaled will conduct business when in town.

Khaled said the unusual setup shows “how much I’m in love with this opportunity to be there.”

The Grammy winner says he always brings “some type of studio” with him, whether in a hotel, rental property, or plane. Thus, doing “business in the back” of the shoe shop is possible.

“The way I make music—I’m working on new music as we speak—I bring a set-up everywhere,” Khaled tells PEOPLE. “Having a studio there is great for dropping, recording for my album, doing a feature, or listening to new music.”

“I think it’s unique and special,” he adds. It’s probably never been done.”

When you see it, Khaled means business, says Bojko. He’s there to work, not just to look great or build a monument to Khaled, which would be fun. He’s meeting. He welcomes the community.”

Khaled says the We the Best x SNIPES store is more than a communal hub, retail experience, and office. “It’s landmark.”

“I go to Times Square in New York,” he says. You must see the Eiffel Tower in Paris. This is a historic area, and even if you don’t want to shop, you’ll want to take a picture.”

Voth says customers have been standing up outside the store for days, but the DJ doesn’t think this will be a problem if Khaled’s vision is realized.

Khaled: “I’m a guy that can multitask in so many ways.

Though he makes music in the back, the in-store DJ won’t play only Khaled-produced material.

All kinds of music will be played. I love tunes. I’m from music, he says, adding that the store’s soundtrack will “go off” what customers and staff want.

“Snipes and We The Best, that’s it. People matter, he says. It’s about love, people coming together to celebrate music, hip-hop culture, lifestyle, community, and blessings.
