The Chris Martin-fronted rock group released their new song and music video for “Higher Power” on Thursday. It is speculated that this song will be the first single off their upcoming album. As the band plays the song, extraterrestrial holograms can be seen dancing all around them.
In the chorus of the song, Martin, 44, croons, “You’ve got a higher power / Got me singing every second / Dancing every hour.” “Oh, yeah / You’ve got a higher power / And you’re rеally someone / I want to know.”
In a press release, the British band said that they originally shared the Max Martin-produced song and video with French ESA astronaut Thomas Pesquet, who is now stationed on the International Space Station.
The music was initially heard on board the International Space Station (ISS), and it was later made available to listeners on Earth via Parlophone/Atlantic.
Prior to the release of “Higher Power,” Coldplay had an open discussion about the song with Pesquet, 43, referring to it as “one big allegory.”
“The song is about trying to find the astronaut in all of us, the person that can do amazing things,” he stated.
Then, in an interview with Zane Lowe for Apple Music, Martin explained the song’s origins, stating that the track’s title had been planned for some time. “There are maybe fifteen ‘Higher Powers’ that aren’t that good if you go on my phone. Voice memos “It said.
“… I think that we’ve been very blessed to have some songs that some people like over the years, largely through tenacity and perseverance, because there’s thousands of ideas that don’t even make it past the drumming department,” he said. “But a song like ‘Higher Power,’ in our whole catalog, there’s probably 15 songs where that’s happened where it basically just… lands.”
For Coldplay, “Higher Power” is their first new song in the previous 24 months. Everyday Life, the group’s most recent album, was published back in 2019.
The well-known band will play “Higher Power” on American Idol on Sunday and at the Brit Awards on Tuesday.
In light of the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic, Coldplay will also be the featured act on the virtual Live at Worthy Farm webcast at the Glastonbury Festival later this month. On May 22, the set will air, followed the next day by an encore stream.
Along with Damon Albarn, Haim, Idles, Jorja Smith, and Kano, the lineup will also include additional artists.
