Was there ever a chance that Coldplay and Backstreet Boys might collaborate?
Frontman Chris Martin played a piano rendition of the Backstreet Boys’ 1997 smash song “Everybody (Backstreet’s Back)” during the “Viva la Vida” group’s Music of the Spheres World Tour stop at the Ullevi stadium in Gothenburg, Sweden, over the weekend. The boy band has granted their consent.
The crowd sung along to the catchy chorus as Martin, 46, performed the pop song while seated at a piano in the center of the room.
Backstreet Boys posted a video of the performance on their Instagram page on Wednesday. They wrote, “Enjoying @coldplay’s rendition of Everybody (Backstreet’s Back)!” next to the video. A true honor.
Through January 2024, Coldplay’s Music of the Spheres World Tour will stop in cities across Europe, North America, Asia, and Oceania.
The pop-rock group has had a number of guests join them over the tour, and “Everybody” wasn’t their first cover. Martin performed a live video call and sang “Rocket Man” by Elton John onstage during the prior Gothenburg event.
“Hello, everyone, here we are in Gothenburg, waving. According to fan footage, the lead vocalist said, “Can you see us, Mr. Elton?”
“I see you,” answered 76-year-old John.
Martin remarked, “Elton, we just love you so much from all of us here, from all the fans and all the artists that you’ve loved and inspired and helped.”
The musician expressed his gratitude for John’s work, saying that he and other fans are “grateful” for everything that John has done for them, the AIDS Foundation, everyone he has shown kindness to, the LGBTQ community, fashion and eyewear, sexiness and love, and more. All of your contributions to music.”
Martin wished John a happy retirement and said, “We’re going to miss you so much, man.” John had just finished his Farewell Yellow Brick Road Tour.
Roger Federer, a former tennis champion, joined Coldplay onstage earlier this month. Before the duo sang “Don’t Panic” from their 2000 debut studio album Parachutes, Martin, 41, introduced Federer as “our original band member” in a fan video that was uploaded to Twitter.
In the midst of the song, Federer was given special attention for a “shaker solo” in which he shook the instrument into the microphone. Federer also let out balloons when the band played “Adventure of a Lifetime.”
