The new song video from Coldplay showcases an alien new band!
The music video for “Biutyful,” a dreamy mid-tempo song from the band’s 2021 album Music of the Spheres, which features the band members giving up their limelight to The Weirdos, an alien puppet band from Jim Henson’s Creature Shop, was unveiled by the British pop-rock group on Wednesday.
The puppets created by the Muppets creator, Angel Moon, Sparkman, Donk, The Wizard, and Bruce Cakemix, are down on their luck in this short, which is set in a world designed exclusively for “Humans.”
The opening vocalist of the song, Angel Moon, is rejected from a human judge’s singing audition; drummer Donk is arrested for busking; guitarist Sparkman tries to teach human children who refuse to listen; The Wizard performs in a studio session to jeering sound engineers; and Bruce Cakemix is fired from his human-run office.
A hidden bar populated by other puppets is reached by the characters following different “R U Weird?” signs. There are drink specials called “We Are Alone in the Universe,” “Everyone Is an Alien Somewhere,” and “We Are All Made of Music.”
Bruce Cakemix, observing them all hone their individual musical skills, makes the decision to form The Weirdos and take on the role of manager.
The Weirdos become the “most popular band on earth” in what seems like no time at all, in typical That Thing You Do! form. Before long, the band is playing as the main act at a stadium show, and fans are dancing and singing along with Chris Martin, Jonny Buckland, Guy Berryman, and Will Champion from Coldplay.
Finding a community of accepting people is the theme of the music video, which echoes the positive message of the song “When you love me… / I’m nowhere else / I’m on top of the world, man… / And it’s so beautiful.”
Since March 2022, Coldplay and The Weirdos have been touring together under the name Music of the Spheres. At each event, Angel Moon has performed live vocals on “Biutyful” for the band.
The Weirdos signed with Atlantic Records last month; Coldplay hasn’t put out music through the label since 2014, when they released their Ghost Stories album. In the same month, both bands performed “Biutyful” together on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon.
Martin recently discussed Coldplay’s creative connection with The Weirdos in an interview with Billboard.
The 45-year-old singer-songwriter told the site, “The Weirdos are a band that we’re trying to help out.” “They have one song at the moment [‘Biutyful’] and we’re on it with them.”
“The way I discovered them was we were working with Angel Moon, this lady… creature,” Martin continued. “I think we thought that we’ve sort of come to the end of doing singles as Coldplay.”
He went on, “We’re a little older now, so that felt good, and we can’t go more poppier or single-y [than “My Universe” with BTS].” We do have some songs that we would like to draw attention to, so we requested the Weirdoes to perform one of their songs and front it, which would allow us to feature.”
