MIKE SHINODA shares an ADORABLE and HILARIOUS story about his daughter not knowing who LINKIN PARK are.
During his recent appearance on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon, Shinoda revealed that until recently one of his daughters had no idea he was in a famous band.
“We’ve not been touring as a band for like seven years. And for them, their memories of Linkin Park are – they don’t really have them, because they were so much younger,” Sinoda explained. “And, actually, a funny thing happened. My kids do play some music. A couple of them play drums, a couple of them play piano, etc. etc. One of my daughters says, ‘Oh, you know, I signed up to play this song at this school festival type of thing.’ And I was like, ‘Oh, that’s so cool. What are you going to do?’ She said, ‘I’m going to sing and play guitar.’ This girl doesn’t know how to play guitar. She took two lessons… This was a couple years ago. She had taken two lessons. And she goes, ‘I’m going to play guitar and sing.’ And I was like, ‘Okay.’
Sinoda continued: “So… it was probably like a week or two later, I’m listening and I’m hearing her doing her thing, and she’s got most of it. Like, she’s getting really pretty far. But there’s a couple things she’s not doing correctly. Like, one of the chords is wrong, for example. So I kind of went in, I was like, ‘How’s everything going?’ And I was, like, talking to her. And I was like, ‘Hey, by the way that one chord at the end of this part it’s actually – your fingers go here.’ And she’s like, ‘Yeah, whatever.’ … Basically, ‘Leave me alone.’ And I was like, ‘Okay, sorry… I’m sure you got it.’ And I left, and a little while later… She came to me and was like, ‘Hey, like, dad, like, um, can you show me that chord?’ And I was like, ‘Oh, yeah, cool. No problem.’ …I gave her some tips and stuff. And then, I thought that was it. I just thought, ‘Oh, she came around.’
“I told my wife this story. Like, we were going to bed. I was telling this story. I was like, ‘Yeah, it was so cool. She, like, came around.’ My wife starts laughing at me. She’s like, ‘That’s not what happened.’ She said, ‘I heard you two talking originally…. And, so, after you left I went in the room and I was like, ‘Hey, you should listen to your dad.’’ And my daughter goes, ‘What does he know about performing?’
“She literally – My wife literally pulled up a video of us, of Linkin Park, onstage at, like, Rock in Rio in front of 85,000 people. And she shows it to her, and my daughter goes, ‘Who’s that?’ And now they get to be out here and see the real show.”
